One rank check lies. The grid tells the truth.
Google Maps shows different results depending on where the searcher is standing. You can rank #1 at your own front door and be completely invisible two miles away — right where plenty of your customers are searching. A single “what’s my rank?” check only ever describes one spot. This free local rank checker checks dozens of points across your service area and maps your real visibility in the Google local pack, so you can see — and close — the gaps.
What your local rank grid reveals
- Your true coverage. The percentage of your area where you land in the top-3 map pack — not just at your address, but everywhere your customers actually search.
- Where you disappear. The red zones are neighborhoods where nearby customers literally can’t find you — lost calls you never knew about.
- Who’s taking your customers. The competitors ranking above you across the map, and how much of your area each one dominates.
What actually moves your Google Maps ranking
Google ranks local results on three factors — relevance, distance, and prominence. You can’t move your building, but nearly everything else is in your control:
- Google Business Profile. Complete, accurate categories, services, hours, description and photos — the #1 lever most businesses leave half-finished.
- Reviews. A steady stream of recent, high-star reviews — and a reply to every one.
- NAP consistency & citations. Identical Name, Address & Phone across Google, your website, and the major directories.
- On-site local SEO. Location and service pages, local schema, and internal links that tell Google precisely what you do and where.
- Local links & relevance. Mentions and links from trusted local sites that prove you’re a real part of the community.
Strengthen these and the green spreads outward — you surface for more searchers, across more of your map. That’s the local SEO work Swarm Digital does for clients every day: turning red grids green.
About the grid scan
How do I check where my business ranks on Google Maps?
Enter your business name, a keyword, and your city above. We run a live geo-grid — dozens of Google Maps searches from different points across your area — and map exactly where you rank at each one. It’s free to find your business; enter an email to reveal the full heatmap.
What is a local rank grid (geo-grid)?
A geo-grid checks your Google ranking from many geographic points around your business instead of just one. Because Google’s map results depend on the searcher’s location, a grid is the only honest way to see your true local visibility across a whole city or service area.
Why does my Google Maps rank change from place to place?
Distance from the searcher is a major local ranking factor. You’ll usually rank highest near your location and fade with distance — and how fast you fade depends on your reviews, categories, and overall local SEO strength. That’s exactly what the grid reveals.
Why am I not showing up on Google Maps?
The usual culprits: an incomplete or unverified Google Business Profile, missing or too-broad categories, too few reviews, inconsistent Name/Address/Phone across the web, or simply strong competitors nearby. Your grid and grade show which of these is holding you back.
What is the local pack (or 3-pack)?
The “local pack” is the block of three map results Google shows at the top of local searches. Ranking in that top 3 is where the clicks and calls are — listings below it get a small fraction of the traffic. The grid shows the % of your area where you make the top 3.
How can I improve my local map rankings?
Optimize your Google Business Profile, earn a steady stream of recent reviews (and reply to them), keep your NAP consistent, build local citations and links, and add location and service content to your website. That’s the local SEO work Swarm does — book a call and we’ll build the plan straight from your grid.
Does this work for service-area businesses without a storefront?
Yes. Service-area businesses still have a Google Business Profile and rank in the map pack. The grid is especially useful here — it shows how far your visibility actually reaches across the areas you serve.
How often should I check my local rankings?
Monthly is a good cadence to track progress as you make improvements. Local rankings shift with your reviews, your competitors’ activity, and Google’s updates, so a periodic grid keeps you honest about what’s working.
How accurate is it, and is it really free?
We pull live Google Maps results from each grid point — the same method the leading rank-grid tools use — so it’s a real snapshot of your current visibility for that keyword. Finding your business is free; the full heatmap is free too, in exchange for your email so we can send you the report.
