What is Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are a set of metrics defined by Google to measure the real-world quality of a page's user experience, focusing on loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability. Rather than assessing how a page looks or what it says, these metrics quantify how it feels to use: how quickly the main content appears, how promptly the page responds to input, and whether elements stay put as it loads. They are a standardized, measurable proxy for the frustration or satisfaction a visitor experiences in the first seconds on a page.

There are three core metrics. Largest Contentful Paint measures loading performance by timing how long it takes for the largest visible content element, often a hero image or headline block, to render. Interaction to Next Paint measures responsiveness by capturing the delay between a user's interactions, such as taps and clicks, and the page's visible response, replacing the earlier First Input Delay metric. Cumulative Layout Shift measures visual stability by scoring how much the page's content unexpectedly moves around while loading, the annoyance of tapping a button that jumps as an ad loads above it. Each metric has thresholds that classify a page as good, needing improvement, or poor, and the scores are drawn both from lab tools that simulate loads and from field data collected from real Chrome users.

Google introduced and named Core Web Vitals in 2020 as part of a broader effort to make page experience a more explicit part of how it evaluates sites. The naming is deliberate. Core signals that these are the essential few metrics that matter most, chosen out of many possible measurements, and web vitals frames the health of a page in the same way medical vital signs summarize the health of a patient: a small number of readings that together indicate whether something is well or unwell.

For a business, Core Web Vitals matter on two levels. First, they are a confirmed ranking factor, folded into Google's page experience signals, so pages that meet the thresholds have a modest advantage in competitive results. Second, and often more importantly, the underlying experiences drive conversions and engagement regardless of ranking. Slow loading, laggy interaction, and jumping layouts cause visitors to abandon pages, so improving these metrics tends to improve revenue and retention directly. The ranking benefit and the business benefit point in the same direction.

The nuances are worth understanding. Core Web Vitals are a real but relatively lightweight ranking factor; they rarely override strong relevance and content quality, so a fast page with weak content will not outrank a slower page that answers the query better. It is a mistake to chase perfect lab scores while ignoring the field data that reflects how actual users on real devices and networks experience the site, since Google emphasizes field measurements. Common causes of poor scores include oversized unoptimized images, render-blocking scripts, heavy third-party tags, and images or ads inserted without reserved space. Treated as a guide to genuine experience rather than a number to game, Core Web Vitals help align technical performance with what visitors and search engines both reward.
